Have you ever been to “La Placita” in Puerto Rico? Called Mercado Santurce, It is a local’s favorite and a staple in Puerto Rican culture. If you haven’t been, not to worry. Five-times James Beard nominee, Chef Jose Mendin and soap opera star Julian Gil have brought La Placita to Miami. The culture of La Placita is based on Boricuas and their fun and free way of life. From the taqueria to the jugueria and farmer’s market, La Placita Miami and its massive Puerto Rican flag painted on the building, have reintroduced Puerto Rican food and culture through the eyes of two Boricuas. 

The interior has been specially detailed to remind you of a Puerto Rican paradise, with cochons, art from Puerto Rican artists and small details like the Goya can silverware holders.  There is outdoor seating for ample social distancing and people watching.

The menu has traditional items like carne guisada, inspired by Jose’s mom, customizable mofongo and queso frito. Other dishes like the watermelon and Florida tomato salad are non-traditional with a Miami twist. First-timers must try the Mofongo, which can be made with a base of green plantains or the house favorite, trifongo (green plantain, yuca, sweet plantain). The Mofongo experience comes with your choice of carne guisada, crab stew, carne frita, camarones al ajillo or carrucho inside. One of the chef’s favorites, La Tripleta sandwich is a great lunch item with three meats: roasted pork, country ham, and pastrami, served with papas fritas.

La Placita features live music and special guest DJs on the weekends, where it becomes a nightlife destination, bringing the heat to the Upper East Side.
